Ramadan, which is considered one of the five 'pillars' of Islam, holds huge importance to Muslims worldwide, as everyone above the age of 12, observe fasts between sunrise and sunset, with a few exceptions of people who travelling, are elderly, pregnant, or whose health might be affected. It is believed that on Ramadan, God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad the Quran, Islam's holy book as guidance for the people.

With days starting early, people eat pre-fast people, known as ‘Suhoor’ which helps them go on about their day, as they can’t break their fast till sunset. It becomes particularly difficult during late spring or early summers, as the days are longer. For example, in polar regions of the world, where daylight can last for 22 hours or more at one stretch, people are allowed to choose the sunrise and sunset timings in Mecca or of a nearby country.

Another crucial aspect of the festival is known as ‘Niyyah’, which translates to the word, ‘intention’, wherein, Muslims, instead of abstaining from food, must achieve their requirement of Niyyah, by possessing the intention in their hearts that the fasting is meant for the worship for Allah alone, and not political or dietary reasons.

Moreover, people who can’t fast for some reason can offer to feed poor people for each day they miss during the festival. Fasting holds huge importance for Muslims for a number of reasons. One is that as you do not pay attention to mortal requirements such as food, one has a chance to be more in tune with the god and to one's spiritual side. The other is that it helps set a reminder for people of the religion to the suffering of the poor, and as a result, the idea of the festival reinforces the importance of charity.

Fasting also helps in developing self-restraint, one's purification, consciousness towards the almighty, compassion towards others, and the spirit of caring and sharing, and the love of God. It is considered an institution for the improvement of a person’s moral and spiritual character.

After getting done with their sunset prayers during the festival, Muslims gather in their homes or mosques and break their fast with ‘Iftar’, the meal that they share with their family members and friends. Iftar usually begins with dates, apricots and water or sweetened milk.

Post their prayers, they wish each other a happy Eid ('Eid Mubarak' in Arabic) and spend the rest of the day with their extended families, enjoying good food, while also sharing gifts with children and loved ones.
